Yeah, my little about-to-turn-2 lady is completely self sufficient with our iPod touch. She’ll find it laying around, pick it up, unlock it and go into one of her little apps, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Baby Flash Cards, Wheels on the Bus, etc.
The only problem being, its hard for her to grip, so she usually has a thumb in the screen while holding it up. This leads to things being randomly uninstalled on the unit. She’s gotten better though. Sometimes she’ll say “uh oh” and hand it to the nearest parent with a screen full of wiggling icons.
Also, until recently, she was quite hilariously calling the device the “myPod” as a result of her trying to replicate my wife asking, “Where’s my iPod?” Maybe its really because she’s more of a Simpsons fan though, who knows.
Our two-year-old daughter picked that up at about the same age too. Now she’s mastered the iPad Video app and switches between her favourite movie and her favourite childrens’ apps without problems…
My son is 2 and thinks every LCD is a touch screen. He’s been able to play with the apps, browse for his favorite tunes, and can do everything but type an email with it since he was 11 months old. Amazing stuff.
This is so cool! I have twin 18 month old boys and I have simply been far too afraid of letting them use either the iPhone or the iPod touch. But I am definitely going home tonight and trying this out.
My daughter did that at 8 months and at the age of one she started the one, clicked the flower and swiped through photos like it was the most natural thing. At the age of 2 now i don’t have to explain anything about the iPad, she started playing Flight Control the other day with me showing her. And she paints in those children coloring books like it’s natral. I’m not saying she is smart. Apple is smart!
My 18 month year old daughter has been doing this for sometime now so I had to password protect my iPhone to stop her from calling my contacts. Now since my iPhone is locked, she trials to dial the emergency call instead. :)
My kid also does this without any problems. He even sometimes adds some favorites on YouTube ;)
And a little video response: http://www.vimeo.com/13483025
Sure, this is a brilliant UI design – unless you actually don’t want your 1 year old messing around with your iPod/iPhone. Kind of makes the whole idea of “locking” the device seem a bit superfluous doesn’t it?
Good UI? Well it depends on how you look at it.
But on a serious note, I have a 1.5 year old cousin and he also unlocks my iPhone without any problems.
I thought it was cute for a while when my 1-year-old did this. Then I started discovering missing apps, apps that had been shuffled around, etc. Now I have a passcode set so that she can’t mess things up. :-)
My son did that at 7 months. He was able to figure out how to navigate photos, navigate between screens, and find his page of games. He was also able to delete applications a *little too* easily.
My 80 year old grandfather on the other hand, had a tougher time with the interface. While he figured out the unlock screen, his fear gave him pause when it came to exploring the interface. He also reacted to the icons as physical buttons, trying to PRESS. THEM. VERY. HARD. As if increasing the force of his finger on the glass would cause the application to respond faster.

7/15/2010 3:43 PMI think what is amazing (and exciting!) is that this is “normal” for kids.
Similar to what @Eric Marden said, a phone that isn’t activated like that is just weird!
